Close call there! Most of the trees out my way are mesquite, which means thorns (or espinas as they say down here). When something similar happened to me while riding a buddy's horse, I had time to duck and grab the horse's neck until we got past the branches. I got a few scratches, but nothing on my face. Once out of danger, I was able to slow her to a walk and then stop her.

Nice post! I've got three burros, a mama, a baby, and a young adult. I've got bosals for the two adults and ride them both bareback. Mama is a good riding burro, but the young adult (named Cleopatra) is pretty frisky. She's thrown me several times and also dragged me a couple of times when I got it into my head to not let go of the rope. Her bucking wasn't a problem. The way I got thrown was this: she started trotting and built up some speed, then she stopped suddenly while lowering her head. Yup! I went flying "over the handlebars", like you do when you crash a bike. The funny thing is is that my legs almost both reach the ground on her. If I point my toes, I can drag the toe of my boot on one side or the other.

Mama is much bigger and I have to vault onto her back and can't touch the ground with my toes.

One last detail. One of my dogs is a cocker spaniel, and I've taught him how to ride, too! He'll only go a short distance before jumping off, maybe 10 feet. But it's funny to watch! He sits there with his tongue hanging out and his big doggy grin.

My 14 yr old QH gelding is the EXACT Same way! he will never yield his quarters because no matter how much pressure you apply he does not get the hint to move. when lounging he will trot around for about 5 min, then come in towards us and when we try to send him away he won't budge a muscle, it is very frustrating and I don't know what to do he also will not move when you ride either, could you give some more suggestions on how to make him move and lunge. thanks

I was mesmerized by Guy's performance at the Kick Start rodeo in Grimes County as well. I think I probably had my mouth open in disbelief the whole time he was in the arena. Guy really is a horseman to look up to and learn from.

Good job! I was an old lady (well, from your perspective) when my horse took off galloping after a wild colt with a 40 acre pasture in front of her. I was scared to death! All I could do was yell, "Help me, Lord!" when through that adrenaline haze I heard my riding buddy yell, "Turn her in a circle!" I did, and she slowed down and finally stopped. And it does feel good when you realize you've risen to a new challenge and come out on top!
